Francisco de Goya was born n 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain. Goya is often called the first of the moderns because of the bold technique of his paintings, the haunting satire of his sketchings and etchings, and his belief that the artistsí vision is more important than tradition. His uncompromising portrayal of the times marks the beginning of 19th century Realism. This canvas reproduces a popular motif, inspired from customs and life in Madrid at the time.
